Make Beauty
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — Tags: — nedpelger

I’ve long been a fan of making fun. I make fun of myself. I make fun of others…indiscriminately. I love having fun and making more fun.

Making money has also been something that just made sense to me. I always had a sense of how money worked and how to make it. So I like making fun and I like making money (in fact, my high school yearbook listed my likes as sex and money and my dislikes as promiscuity and materialism), but in recent years I’ve realized I like making beauty.

When I look at the photos below, I’m even further encouraged to make beauty.

An artist in British Columbia stacked his firewood a little differently. I imagine all the joy it gave him and all the joy the photos have given others.  The photo below shows more detail, and also shows it’s not a photoshop deal.

As you inventory your self and your year, as you look forward to how you want next year to go, consider the place of beauty in your world. I think you may find that joy often resides near beauty. You think about that.

A Wonderful Wife and Mother
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — nedpelger

I tend to get introspective around this time of year. Christmas and New Year’s make me think deeply about what I’m doing and what’s important. As I perused one of my favorite websites, PostSecret.com, I saw the photo below with the inscription:

i was at goodwill this morning with my mother looking at a coat when I saw this message inside. it touched me and i thought about it the rest of the day – with my mom.

A flood of thoughts flows from that photo. I’m thankful I still have my Mom, even as her health declines. I’m glad I’ve been able to tell her how much I appreciate all her love and action that helped me learn and grow. I’m thankful that TBW’s mother was in our life and gave such an amazing model for how to be a mother-in-law and grandmother. I’m especially thankful for TBW. She continues to make every day an adventure for me, never losing her charm or mystery. After 35 years, we keep getting better.

So here’s to you, Trisha, and to all those you’ve loved and touched. You’ve just added to your circle.

Men’s Restroom Etiquette
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — Tags: — nedpelger

Back by popular demand (meaning this video cracks me up and I want to show it again), here’s a post from a couple of years ago.

We went to Penn Cinema movie theater yesterday, as I walked into the toilet I remembered this video on Men’s Restroom Etiquette. It expounds on the social contract of male restroom use. Men are praised for their efficiency compared to woman, but warned of several rules to never break.
1. Wast no time: walk in, do your business, wash your hands, exit
2. Never make eye contact
3. Use an appropriate decision strategy for urinal selection
4. Speech is your enemy. Never ever, under any circumstances, say a single word in a Men’s Room.
Watch the video to understand one of the best lines in video history, “Ralph and Chuck begin to…ralph and chuck.”

Since most of us build toilet facilities in our buildings, I thought you would benefit from knowing the rules about how to use those facilities. You may want to forward this instructional video to Building Owners prior to beneficial occupancy. You may even want to insert this video in the Plumbing Operation and Maintenance manuals. I’m just saying…

By the way, I have a Drainage Calculation app review today in the Apps Blog.

Couldn’t Tell the Head from the Tail
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — Tags: — nedpelger

There was an old Construction Superintendent who lived in Arkansas and hadn’t been exposed to much beyond his little town. One day, he was out with his crew, framing a building on the edge of town, and saw the strangest thing in his entire life. He saw an elephant come walking down the street and go into cabbage field next to his jobsite.

This old Super just stood and watched this elephant in the cabbage field. As I said, he hadn’t been much for education and had never seen an elephant before, never even seen a picture of one.

Turns out the circus was coming through the town and one of the elephants escaped from a wagon. The sheriff came walking onto the jobsite and asked the old Super about the elephant. The old man replied, “I never seen anything like it. That critter keeps pulling up the cabbage with its tail.”

The sheriff said, “What? Pulled them up with his tail? What did he do with them?

The old Super replied, “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you!”

Friday Fun: Stupid Is as Stupid Does
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — Tags: — nedpelger

Take a minute to smile at the stupidity of others. Can you imagine yourself in any of those scenarios?

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RKY9u-S8TU&NR=1

I’m working on a project right now to try to figure how to raise an existing roof 4′ for a steel framed joist and deck, EPDM roof system for a 130′ x 80′ room. I’m hoping we don’t end up on one of these videos. If you’ve ever done a steel roof raising, shoot me a note, I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Drama on the Jobsite
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — Tags: — nedpelger

We’ve been having some drama on the jobsite in the last few weeks, people seem to be feeling the stress of the economy and acting out. My buddy Kneal shot me this video that shows a drama queen in training (DQIT).

I sat here and laughed at this video and the little DQIT and hope you do the same.

Friday Silliness
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — Tags: — nedpelger

Well, we made it through another week…in fact we checked off another summer into the past column.

I encourage you to take a moment to remember and enjoy Monty Python’s Silly Olympics. You deserve a good laugh.

My Morning Run
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — Tags: — nedpelger

As regular readers know, I believe in a balanced life. Neglect your physical, emotional, intellectual or spiritual aspects at your own peril. When I was younger, wrestling and judo motivated me physically. Now I find triathlons do the trick. The video below, My Morning Run, gives you a sense of combining physicality and joy.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOOlUR9Cg1Q

To quote the always appropriate WC Fields, “Don’t be a Fuddy Duddy, don’t be a Jabbernow, don’t be a Mooncalf, You wouldn’t want to be any of those things, would you Lud?” Get out there today, do something physical and have some fun.

Thanks to Lex Pelger, monkeyboy extraordinaire, for recommending the video…and for all your work on getting the phone apps done. I see you when I watch those boys leaping and climbing.

Good Laugh for a Friday
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — nedpelger

I just came across this 35 second clip that has made me laugh out loud a few times. Just remember the advice of Paul Newman’s dying mother in Cool Hand Luke, “Laugh it up, kid, you’ll be fine.” Hope you have a great weekend. Remember to relax and laugh.

The Lost Art of Nail Throwing
Filed under: Ned Weirdness — nedpelger

It’s a rainy day in PA and we canceled the footing crews today. So what do you do with a bit of time on your hands? Perhaps practice your nail throwing.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOs2DKapHzQ

My 9 year old grandson Clay and I have been throwing Ninja stars and knives the past few days, maybe we should add the common nail to our repertoire.
